Racing Incident Report
When the gates opened, SPECTACULAR HIT bounded in the air. LEAD TO WIN and SURE FORTUNE were slow to begin. Making the first turn, PRODIGY was momentarily crowded for room inside MADE IN HONGKONG which at this time got its head on the side and shifted in. Apprentice H W Lai (ALWAYS ZIETEN) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that at the 700 Metres he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of NEW MILESTONE, causing that horse to be checked and lose its rightful running. Apprentice Lai's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to expire on Sunday 23 May 2004 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley meeting next Wednesday 12 May 2004. At the 400 Metres, PRODIGY was steadied when racing tight inside MADE IN HONGKONG while endeavouring to shift to the outside of SMART CHIEF. Near the 300 Metres, Apprentice P H Lo (MADE IN HONGKONG) dropped his whip. In the Straight, GOLDEN MAPLE hung in. For the major part of the race, VENETIAN MASTER travelled wide and without cover. Throughout the race, STEP FORWARD raced wide and without cover, in the Straight got its head on the side and was inclined to hang out. After passing the winning post, MAGIC TEMPLE (A Marcus) shifted in and made heavy contact with the running rail. Subsequent to the race, A Marcus was examined by the Club's doctor who said he had sustained an injury to his right foot and was not suitable to fulfil his remaining riding engagements. NEW MILESTONE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of NEW MILESTONE after the race did not show any significant findings. STEP FORWARD, GOLDEN MAPLE and ALWAYS ZIETEN were sent for sampling.
