Racing Incident Report
When the gates opened, WATCH ME WIN bounded in the air and lost ground. LUCKY BIRD, BROWN BEAUTY and LOK WAH TREASURE were slow to begin. From a gate towards the outside, SPLIT SECONDS was immediately steadied and taken back to a position near the rear of the field and then in the early stages proved difficult to settle. At the 1200 Metres, A Delpech (WATCH ME WIN) reached down with his left hand to adjust his foot in the stirrup. After the 1000 Metres, SHANGHAI FRIEND was steadied when unable to maintain its position between BROWN BEAUTY and LUCKY BIRD which was laying in. After the 800 Metres, LOK WAH TREASURE, which had been racing towards the rear, was carried out slightly by LUCKY BIRD and as a result was obliged to race without cover. After this, H K Yim allowed LOK WAH TREASURE to stride forward. For some distance after the 500 Metres, ELITE WIN was unable to improve when awkwardly placed behind SUPER WONGCHOY and MAXIMUM JOY which was commencing to give ground. SPLIT SECONDS made the Home Turn awkwardly and hung out. Near the 100 Metres, SHANGHAI FRIEND was steadied when disappointed for running between BROWN BEAUTY (R Fradd) and SPLIT SECONDS (F Coetzee), both of which shifted ground. R Fradd and F Coetzee were advised in similar circumstances they would be expected to stop riding and straighten their mounts. BROWN BEAUTY, SPLIT SECONDS and ELITE WIN were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted SPLIT SECONDS had lost its left front plate. Following the race, WATCH ME WIN was examined by the Veterinary Officer at the request of Trainer A T Millard. An endoscopic examination was carried out and this showed the horse to have a displaced soft palate.
