Racing Incident Report
S K Sit was fined $3,000 for accepting rides on both JADE RUYI and RENA'S WUNDERBAR. It was established that he had a firm commitment for JADE RUYI and permission was granted for Y T Cheng to be substituted as the rider of RENA'S WUNDERBAR. DASH FOR VICTORIES, first Standby Declared Starter, was withdrawn on 18.1.03 on veterinary grounds (left fore infection). When the gates opened, JADE RUYI bounded in the air and lost ground. SHANGHAI FRIEND and DESERT STRIKE were slow to begin. In the early stages, CRYSTAL STEEL, which was racing in blinkers for the first time today, proved difficult to settle and at the 1500 Metres got its head up, shifted out and bumped HANDSOME DRAGON which as a result was carried wider. For some distance in the early stages, LUCKY FRIENDS was ridden along hard in an endeavour to clear runners to its inside and shift to race on the fence in the lead, however, despite the manner in which it was being ridden, LUCKY FRIENDS was unable to clear SUPER COMBED and FIRST KNIGHT, therefore was obliged to race three wide outside the leader. From the outside barrier, GOLDEN MAPLE travelled wide and without cover and shortly after straightening was bumped on several occasions by DESERT STRIKE which was endeavouring to shift to the outside of FABULOUS to obtain clear running. HANDSOME DRAGON gave ground from the 800 Metres and finished tailed off. The performance of HANDSOME DRAGON was considered unacceptable. Before the horse can race again, it will be required to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. From on straightening until after the 200 Metres, SHANGHAI FRIEND was held up and unable to obtain clear running between VICTORY MOUNT and ON THE TEE. After the 200 Metres, SHANGHAI FRIEND was shifted to the outside of ON THE TEE to obtain clear running between that horse and CRYSTAL STEEL. C Williams (FIRST KNIGHT) explained he had been instructed to use the horse's early speed from a good barrier, cross to the fence and then attempt to steady to allow other runners to cross him. He said FIRST KNIGHT began well, then he had to have some use made of it to clear VICTORY MOUNT to cross to the fence. Shortly after this, he became aware LUCKY FRIENDS was under pressure towards the outside to go forward and he considered in the circumstances it would be more beneficial for him to ensure he held his position to the inside of that runner and prevented it crossing to the rail in front of him as he felt because of the work it had done in the early stages, LUCKY FRIENDS would start to give ground in front of him after crossing. C Williams said in slightly different circumstances he would allow FIRST KNIGHT to race with cover. The explanations submitted by C Williams were accepted. HANDSOME DRAGON and FIRST KNIGHT were sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, HANDSOME DRAGON and FIRST KNIGHT were examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. GOT IT RIGHT and DESERT STRIKE were sent for sampling.
