Racing Incident Report
After arriving at the course, Assistant Trainer Y W Ho noted I AM OKAY had sustained an abrasion to the right hock while in the holding stalls during the day. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon, trotted up and after the necessary consultations was passed suitable to race. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in. They were of the prima facie view that I AM OKAY had had an unfair start. After viewing the official video of the start, the Stewards were satisfied that when the gates were released, I AM OKAY, which had drawn stall 4, had its head turned to the left hand side into stall 5 and behind an upright. As a consequence, the horse was not able to jump. The Stewards were of the opinion that I AM OKAY had had an unfair start and accordingly deemed I AM OKAY to be a non-runner [Rule 12(19)]. L'ENFANT began awkwardly, bumped the outside of its gate and as a consequence lost ground. From an awkward gate, SHOW BRAVELY was obliged to race wide without cover throughout. At the 1000 Metres, GOLDEN SPIRIT became unbalanced when awkwardly placed on the heels of LASER PRIDE. After the 600 Metres, GOLDEN SPIRIT was steadied when awkwardly placed on the outside of L'ENFANT and inside the heels of SHOW BRAVELY which had commenced to give ground. Mr L Ho, trainer of HIGHLIGHT, explained the stable had little confidence leading into tonight's race after considering the horse's previous performances at Happy Valley which were poor and the fact it had drawn a wide gate. Mr Ho said he instructed Apprentice M W Leung to take advantage of the horse's light weight tonight, ride forward from the barrier and endeavour to obtain a position towards the front. He said HIGHLIGHT was unable to go the early pace of the race tonight and as a consequence travelled in a rearward position which was a surprise to him. He added he had not altered the training of HIGHLIGHT since its last start and it had been showing good form in the morning on the track. He concluded by saying the performance of HIGHLIGHT tonight was not anticipated. ELITE WIN, HIGHLIGHT and ACE ACADEMY were sent for sampling.
