Racing Incident Report
SUPER COMBED, which was standing awkwardly and had its head turned to the right side, missed the start badly. On jumping, BEAR SUPREMO and CHAMP DRAGON bumped. When the gates opened, PROFIT DAY bounded in the air and bumped the outside of its starting stall. In the early stages, AMO pulled hard and got its head up. About the 600 Metres, SUPER COMBED became unbalanced and shifted ground when awkwardly placed close to the heels of GOLDEN CHOICE. SPINNING CITY, which was following SUPER COMBED, was hampered in consequence. About the 300 Metres, ENERGETIC PRINCE was momentarily unbalanced when close to the heels of GREAT DRAGON which was giving ground. Just after this, ENERGETIC PRINCE shifted out and bumped RED LANCER. Near the 200 Metres, LOVE ON EARTH was shifted out to avoid AMO. In the run to the winning post, LOVE ON EARTH hung in and about right on the line bumped FANTASTIC HORSE. When questioned, G Mosse (BEAR SUPREMO) said he had recently ridden the horse in trials, on those occasions it had broken from the gates quickly and it was anticipated by both himself and the trainer BEAR SUPREMO would break quickly today and take up a position somewhere in the first 3 or 4. He said however BEAR SUPREMO did not leave the gates as enthusiastically as he hoped it would, he found himself in an awkward position and did consider running to the first turn shift to the outside of RED LANCER and go forward, but elected not to do so as this would have obliged him to cover a lot of extra ground early in the race. He said he took up a position behind PROFIT DAY, BEAR SUPREMO was pulling and he did hope by racing with some cover he would be taken into the race. He went on to say he realised after the 600 Metres he was too far out of his ground, but to have shifted to the extreme outside and improved rounding the Home Turn was in his opinion not in the best interests of BEAR SUPREMO today. He said however near the 500 Metres he realised he had to shift out, give the horse an uninterrupted run and ride it hard to the line which he did. G Mosse acknowledged his ride on this horse today was not one of his usual standard and had clearly contributed to the horse's defeat, however, he was firmly of the view the circumstances of this race gave him little opportunity to ride the horse other than the way he did. Whilst the Stewards accepted the explanations submitted by G Mosse, he was told his ride had not been of the high standard expected from him and had come under notice. He was also told he should endeavour at all times to ride in a manner which leaves no room for query. F Coetzee (CHAMP DRAGON) said he had recently ridden the horse in work, the horse had worked only fairly, but he put it down to not having blinkers on. He said today the intention was to lead with CHAMP DRAGON if possible, working to the Start he was very concerned with the action of CHAMP DRAGON, he thought there was something wrong with the horse and on arriving at the starting point he reported this to the Veterinary Surgeon. The horse was trotted up and after the necessary consultations it was decided CHAMP DRAGON was suitable to race. F Coetzee said however in the very early stages he was aware something was wrong with CHAMP DRAGON, he did not ride it in his normal fashion. On pulling up, it was apparent to him there was something wrong with the horse behind. CHAMP DRAGON was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer said the horse was lame in its right side hind leg. Before CHAMP DRAGON can race again, it must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. BEAR SUPREMO, LOVE ON EARTH and FANTASTIC HORSE were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted that GOLDEN CHOICE was making an abnormal breathing noise. This has been previously reported.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 25 Nov. 2002) :
Dr Brian Stewart, the Club's Senior Veterinary Officer, has today advised a bone scan was performed on CHAMP DRAGON on 22 November 2002. Dr Stewart said the bone scan confirmed damage to the horse's pelvis area and he said it is likely this injury occurred as a result of sudden, unbalanced acceleration out of the starting gates. As previously reported, CHAMP DRAGON will not be allowed to race again until it performs satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and passes an official veterinary examination.
