Racing Incident Report

At declaration time, E Saint-Martin was declared by Trainer D Hill to ride DESERT STORM when he already had a firm commitment for MENDOZA. Trainer D Hill was fined $2,000 for a declaration error. EQUIKIT began very awkwardly and lost ground at the start. CELEBRATION jumped in at the start and bumped the inside gate of its stall. On jumping, DESERT STORM was bumped by SIXTY SECONDS which got its head up and shifted out abruptly. Shortly after the start, HALO KING PRAWN was bumped by KEV BUSHIDO which shifted out. Near the 1400 Metres, HALO KING PRAWN, which was over-racing and proving very difficult to settle, got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of DESERT STORM, shifted out abruptly and caused interference on its outside to a number of runners. The main sufferers were AMBITIOUS TYCOON which was hampered and carried wider, LOYAL DEVOTION and FORWOOD, both of which were checked severely, and SIXTY SECONDS which was also hampered. For some distance after the 1000 Metres, MENDOZA raced tight inside THUNDER STORM (M Cahill) which shifted in. M Cahill was advised to ensure he leaves sufficient racing room to runners on his inside at all times. At the 300 Metres, MENDOZA (E Saint-Martin) was checked severely when disappointed for running between TRIUMPHANT FEELING and CELEBRATION (H K Yim) which shifted out. When MENDOZA was checked, it bumped the hindquarters of TRIUMPHANT FEELING, causing that horse to become badly unbalanced. As the Stewards could not be satisfied to the necessary degree that MENDOZA had obtained rightful running between CELEBRATION and TRIUMPHANT FEELING prior to this incident, it was decided that no action be taken, however, H K Yim was advised he must at all times exercise care when shifting ground. E Saint-Martin pleaded guilty to a charge of misconduct [Rule 155(5)] in that after leaving the Inquiry Room following the completion of this inquiry, he did misconduct himself by way of swearing in the vicinity of the Weighing Room. E Saint-Martin was fined $20,000. W C Marwing (HALO KING PRAWN) explained after the incident at the 1400 Metres when his mount shifted out abruptly, it continued to over-race and hung out badly for the remainder of the race. He said approaching the 200 Metres, HALO KING PRAWN was brushed by LUCKY COMBINATION which improved on his inside, however, at this stage his mount was giving ground. He said the poor performance of HALO KING PRAWN in his opinion could be attributed solely to the manner in which it travelled throughout the race. The performance of HALO KING PRAWN was considered to be unacceptable and before the horse can race again, it will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial around a bend. HALO KING PRAWN was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
