Racing Incident Report

CAPITAL STAR jumped very awkwardly with its head up. COSMO ONE, which was standing with its head turned slightly to the off side, missed the start. Rounding the latter part of the Home Turn, COSMO ONE was held up on the heels of BOLD'N POWER. E Saint-Martin (LOOK WHO'S ANGEL) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding. The careless riding being that he permitted his mount to shift inwards at about the 200 Metres when not clear of FOREVER VICTORY. As a consequence of this, FOREVER VICTORY was taken in across the running of JUST WIN which then struck the heels of FOREVER VICTORY and was severely checked. E Saint-Martin was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday 18 June 2001 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong race days). In addition, he was fined $60,000. The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin meeting next Saturday 9 June 2001. The Stewards deferred the declaration of Weighed-In. They were of the prima facie view that an incident had occurred in the Straight which cast sufficient doubt on whether POT BLACK (D Whyte) should be declared the winner of the race. They decided there was justification to have the matter resolved formally and openly at an objection hearing [Rule 151(iv)]. R Fradd, the rider of DOUBLE MARTINI, second placegetter, also objected against POT BLACK being declared the winner, alleging interference to his mount over about the last 20 Metres. Following the conduct of a formal hearing, the Stewards on all the available evidence were of the opinion that although DOUBLE MARTINI and POT BLACK did come together in the run to the winning post, this was due to both horses shifting ground slightly. It was further established that after the 200 Metres DOUBLE MARTINI shifted in slightly and made contact with POT BLACK. In all the circumstances, the Stewards were of the view the objection should be overruled and accordingly the placings as semaphored were confirmed.
