Racing Incident Report
Prior to the running of Race 1, the Stewards interviewed Mr D Shum, Assistant Trainer to Mr I W Allan, regarding the condition of ORIENTAL TREASURE. ORIENTAL TREASURE last ran on 10 January 2001, since then the Stewards could only see where the horse had worked over 400 Metres on 10 March 2001 in 29.5 and on 15 March 2001 worked over 800 Metres in 57.9. Other than those two pieces of light work, ORIENTAL TREASURE had been confined to slow work. It was also noted since its last run the horse had put on 27 pounds in body weight. Mr Shum said about 6 months ago ORIENTAL TREASURE did have significant problems with the tendon on its off side front leg, but this had been treated and Mr Shum was of the view the horse would be competitive in tonight's race and certainly was fit enough to be properly tested out under race conditions. Mr Shum also pointed out that ORIENTAL TREASURE had successfully undergone a pre-declaration veterinary examination, but tonight the Stewards insisted that ORIENTAL TREASURE be again examined by a Veterinary Surgeon other than the usual Veterinary Surgeon who attends to Mr Allan's horses. Subsequently ORIENTAL TREASURE was examined by Dr K L Watkins, Senior Veterinary Surgeon, and on his advice ORIENTAL TREASURE was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. Before ORIENTAL TREASURE can race again, it will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. FLIGHT OF FANCY jumped very awkwardly with its head up, shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of CHARITY FIRST. Then in the early stages FLIGHT OF FANCY had a tendency to over-race and throw its head about. On jumping, THE RICH MAN was crowded for room between D'OR WIN and BRAVEHEART which on jumping shifted out. Turning into the Back Straight, THE RICH MAN proved difficult to settle and several times got its head up. Approaching the 600 Metres, D'OR WIN shifted out from behind HONEST DRAGON, made contact with FORTUNE TYCOON which at this time was not travelling well and obliged that horse to race wider. In the Straight, FLIGHT OF FANCY hung in and at about the 200 Metres W Woods dropped his whip. A Marcus (FORTUNE TYCOON) was unable to put forward any reasons for the horse's poor run. He said it was expected FORTUNE TYCOON would be competitive in the race tonight, the horse travelled nicely until about the 600 Metres and when put under pressure got its ears back, dropped the bit and was well beaten shortly afterwards. D'OR WIN was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
