Racing Incident Report
Mr B Hutchison, Trainer of NIFTY DANCER, which was a Standby Declared Starter for this race, was fined $2,000 for entering NIFTY DANCER in the official barrier trials at Sha Tin yesterday morning. Mr Hutchison acknowledged he was in breach of the regulations regarding official barrier trials. Just after the 1000 Metres, BUENO BUENO shifted in abruptly from behind BELOVED PARTNER and caused some inconvenience to TOP FIT which was carried towards the running rail. After the 1000 Metres, MEDIC HERO was severely checked when crowded between KING COBRA (T Culhane) which was shifting in and BELOVED PARTNER which had a tendency to be over-racing, got its head up and shifted out away from FOR SZESZE which was racing awkwardly just outside the hindquarters of WINNING MASCOT. The check to MEDIC HERO was one of some significance, but in view of all the circumstances the Stewards believed they were not in a position to take any direct action, however, T Culhane was advised that he must ride with greater care. In the middle stages, BRUIN SUPREME had a tendency to lay out, then in the Straight continued to lay out, because of this E Saint-Martin had to stop riding and change his whip hand. After the 500 Metres, BELOVED PARTNER became awkward on the hindquarters of KING COBRA and shifted out, then on straightening BELOVED PARTNER was again inconvenienced on the hindquarters of KING COBRA when that horse was taken out slightly by CITY FORTUNE. When asked about what appeared to be an improved performance from BRUIN SUPREME tonight, Mr G Lane, Trainer of the horse, said in his opinion there were obvious excuses for the horse's last run when it ran poorly. He said on that occasion he was emphatic with the rider that he must not in any way endeavour to fight with BRUIN SUPREME, but should allow the horse to stride along at its own leisure if possible. He said on that occasion D Harrison did endeavour to settle BRUIN SUPREME, the horse resented this, was inclined to hang out and weakened over the concluding stages. Mr Lane said on that day he would have used E Saint-Martin as the rider, but at the time he was under suspension. He went on to point out that this season BRUIN SUPREME has been successful in three races. He acknowledged it did run poorly in the early part of the season over 2000 Metres which in his opinion was too far for BRUIN SUPREME and he said there were certainly excuses for the horse last time. He said since that run the horse had trialed well when ridden by E Saint-Martin and tonight he again emphasized to the rider that he must allow BRUIN SUPREME to run freely. After considering all the circumstances and the explanations submitted by Mr Lane, it was decided not to pursue the matter any further. R Fradd (BELOVED PARTNER) said the incident at about the 1000 Metres in which BELOVED PARTNER was involved did unsettle the horse, caused it to become unbalanced and get further out of the race than was planned. He said on the turn BELOVED PARTNER again became awkward when behind KING COBRA and he was also of the view that the horse may not have raced at its best in tonight's going. The Stewards accepted the explanations submitted by R Fradd, but did believe the performance of the horse was unacceptable and before it can race again, BELOVED PARTNER will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. S Dye (BUENO BUENO) said after being boxed the horse was restless in the gates, did not come out as well as expected, was unable to keep up in the early stages and got further out of his ground than was planned. He said at the 1000 Metres he had to shift in abruptly to avoid the crowding which was occurring in front of him and shortly after this BUENO BUENO was off the bit, then over the concluding stages did make some ground. BUENO BUENO and BELOVED PARTNER were sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
