Racing Incident Report
THE RICH MAN jumped very awkwardly, threw its head about and lost a lot of ground. The performance of THE RICH MAN was considered to be unacceptable. Before the horse will be allowed to race again, it must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. About the 1600 Metres, VICTORY DRUM was severely checked when crowded by EXCEPTIONAL which was taken in slightly by GOLDCHIN BEST which was racing in blinkers for the first time and shifted in slightly away from the heels of NATURE'S TREASURE. The check to VICTORY DRUM was one of considerable significance, but the Stewards were not able to attribute responsibility to any rider or riders and therefore no action was taken. About the 600 Metres, GOLDCHIN BEST shifted out from behind DIAMOND TALENTS, in doing so GOLDCHIN BEST made contact with FAT CHOY TOGETHER and obliged that horse to race wider for a short distance. Apprentice K C Tsang (SEA PEARL) said the horse left the gates awkwardly, then at no stage of the race did the horse stretch out as he thought it should, several times it made abnormal breathing noises. After the race, it was noted that the ring portion of the bit on the horse had shifted out of position and was wedged across the horse's nose. The Senior Veterinary Surgeon, who observed the horse after the race and with the ring portion of the bit across its nostril, said this would have partially closed off the nostrils of SEA PEARL which would have made it difficult to breathe. Mr L Fownes, Trainer of SEA PEARL, said he had instructed Apprentice K C Tsang to kick the horse along out of the gates and either lead or certainly in the first 2 or 3. He said he was surprised to see the horse back in the race where it was. Mr Fownes said a great percentage of his horses run with ring bits fitted and this was the first time he can remember an occurrence such as this one happening. SEA PEARL and EXCEPTIONAL were sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing. The Veterinary Surgeon reported that when he examined EXCEPTIONAL following the race, the horse was stiff behind. Before being permitted to race again, EXCEPTIONAL will be required to undergo an official veterinary examination.
