Racing Incident Report
Whilst being saddled up ZENON LIGHT kicked out and made contact with a wall. After arriving at the Start, the horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who discussed its condition with the rider. It was then decided by the Veterinary Surgeon that ZENON LIGHT was suitable to race. LUCKY NUMBER jumped with its head up. On leaving the gates ACE ACADEMY shifted in, bumped MONEY WINS. About the 900 Metres MONEY got its head up when being steadied away from the hindquarters of INDY'S GEM. Near the 800 Metres, PLENTY WIN got its head up, hung out onto the heels of CHIU CHOW BROTHER and was checked. About the 700 Metres MONEY got its head up and hung out onto the heels of BLESSINGS' PARTNER and lost its position. About the 600 Metres MONEY again got its head up and became unbalanced when awkward on the heels of BLESSINGS' PARTNER which itself was steadied from behind INDY'S GEM. In the early part of the Straight PLENTY WIN was awkward on the heels of ALL SATISFY. For a distance approaching 200 Metres MONEY was held up behind ZENON LIGHT which was stopping. To obtain running and go forward MONEY was shifted out and followed BLESSINGS' PARTNER through. When questioned, Mr A S Cruz, Trainer of LUCKY NUMBER, said the horse had won its first race in Hong Kong when ridden from the front. He said after that when continued to be ridden this way the horse was not finishing its races off, was very disappointing. He said he then trialed the horse at Happy Valley and insisted that it be dropped out in the trial which it was and it indicated to him that the horse would be better suited if ridden back. As a consequence of this the horse was then ridden back with success. He said at its last run at Happy Valley the horse was drawn about the middle and over 1650 Metres at Happy Valley he felt he had no alternative but to instruct his rider to go forward. He said the horse was ridden this way but as the race turned out it did not get an easy run in front and although not far from the winner finished towards the rear of the field. He said today from a gate towards the outside he instructed F Coetzee to ride LUCKY NUMBER at the back and ensure the horse finished the race off strongly. A S Cruz was told whilst the Stewards understand different tactics have to apply in different circumstances, there is a limit to the number of times radical changes can be made to riding tactics and he was asked to keep this in mind.
