Racing Incident Report
Before being presented in the Parade Ring, ENORMOUS WAY had its near side front plate refitted. The horse was trotted up, examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who discussed the matter with the Trainer and it was then decided that ENORMOUS WAY was in the opinion of the Veterinary Surgeon suitable to race. TELECOM TWIN jumped very awkwardly, bumped the inside of its gate. INVINCIBLE GENERAL, which was restless after being boxed, jumped awkwardly and threw its head about. PRODIGY was slowly away. About the 1600 Metres, FLORAL CHEERS became momentarily unbalanced and shifted out. In the latter part of the turn and in the early part of the Straight, ENORMOUS WAY and ALY BABA raced tight due mainly to ENORMOUS WAY endeavouring to shift out. Near the 300 Metres, ENORMOUS WAY was checked severely and shifted out when disappointed for running between PRETTY BABY which shifted in and EXPRESS LOT which when giving ground was taken out by ASPIRATION. PRETTY BABY was obliged to race wide throughout and was not able to find any cover. W C Marwing (INVINCIBLE GENERAL) said the intention was if possible to ride the horse somewhere towards the front or even lead. He said INVINCIBLE GENERAL left the gates badly, he then tried to settle the horse rounding the first turn and along the back pushed INVINCIBLE GENERAL in an endeavour to go forward. He said the horse however did not pick up the bit and was a hard ride throughout. When questioned, D Whyte (ENORMOUS WAY) said he had raced tight inside EXPRESS LOT for some time during the race in an endeavour to maintain a position behind PRODIGY. He said near the 600 Metres ASPIRATION shifted away from the fence slightly whilst EXPRESS LOT maintained its position tight inside PRETTY BABY. He said to have maintained his running behind PRODIGY would have meant putting ENORMOUS WAY under considerable pressure and in the circumstances he elected not to do this, but to shift out and hopefully follow EXPRESS LOT through. He acknowledged in hindsight had he maintained the position behind PRODIGY, a clear run would have presented itself for him in the early part of the Straight. However, he was emphatic that even adopting the option that he did, had he not been checked when disappointed for running between PRETTY BABY and EXPRESS LOT, ENORMOUS WAY would have still gone on to win the race. Whilst the Stewards were concerned that D Whyte had failed to maintain his position at a vital stage, the explanations he presented on this occasion were reasonable and therefore he was advised they were being accepted by the Stewards. ENORMOUS WAY was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
